At approximately 8:40 PM IST on May 8, 2025, Pakistan initiated a significant military escalation by launching a coordinated missile and drone strike targeting Jammu, the winter capital of Indian-administered Kashmir. The assault, which also affected areas including Pathankot and Udhampur, marks a severe intensification in the ongoing conflict between India and Pakistan.

Indian defense systems, including the S-400 missile defense system, successfully intercepted eight incoming missiles aimed at strategic military installations in Jammu. However, one drone breached defenses and struck Jammu Airport, causing damage to infrastructure. Simultaneously, explosions were reported in Jammu city, leading to power outages and widespread panic among residents. In response, Indian fighter jets conducted counteroffensive operations, targeting Pakistani military positions. Pakistan claims to have downed 25 Indian drones during the engagement, though India disputes these claims.

This escalation follows a series of retaliatory strikes between the two nations. On May 7, India launched “Operation Sindoor,” targeting nine locations in Pakistan, including alleged militant camps. Pakistan responded by shooting down five Indian aircraft, according to its military reports. The situation has led to heavy artillery shelling along the Line of Control, resulting in civilian casualties on both sides.

The international community has expressed deep concern over the escalating violence. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has called for immediate de-escalation and direct dialogue between India and Pakistan. Similarly, Russia and China have urged both nations to exercise restraint to prevent a broader conflict.

As of now, both countries remain on high alert, with military forces mobilized along the border. The situation continues to evolve, and further developments are anticipated in the coming hours.
