In recent days, tensions between India and Pakistan have sharply escalated, raising concerns of a potential full-scale conflict between the nuclear-armed neighbors.
The latest surge in hostilities began on April 22, 2025, when a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, resulted in the deaths of 26 Indian tourists. India attributed the attack to Pakistan-based militant groups, including Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed. In retaliation, India launched “Operation Sindoor” on May 7, targeting nine locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
The operation was described as a precision strike aimed at dismantling terrorist infrastructure. India reported the elimination of approximately 100 militants, emphasizing that the operation was conducted with minimal collateral damage. However, Pakistan condemned the strikes, claiming that civilian sites were targeted, resulting in at least 31 deaths and 57 injuries, including children. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif vowed retaliation, labeling the Indian action as an “act of war.”
In the days following the airstrikes, both nations engaged in artillery exchanges along the Line of Control, with Pakistan reporting the shooting down of 25 Indian drones. Amidst these developments, India has deployed its indigenous aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant, to the Arabian Sea. INS Vikrant, commissioned in 2022, represents a significant milestone in India’s naval development, with over 76% of its components being indigenously sourced.
